Twin Oaks has been family owned and operated since 1975. But it didn’t really begin there! In addition to being a teacher during the school year, Hal Elman worked as the Head Counselor at Twin Oaks before 1975. He always loved working with children and loved spending his summers outdoors. When the former owners were looking to sell, Hal saw this as an opportunity to pursue his calling.... his love of the camping experience! Hal teamed up with his college friend, Bernie Hoffman, and together, along with their wives, purchased the camp. The owners always knew everyone’s name and the campgrounds became every campers’ home away from home. "Papa Hal" (as he is fondly called) even drove the first Twin Oaks bus! That approach remains today, as parents trust that we treat their children as our own. Many of the campers and students from the 70’s and 80’s have returned to us and entrusted us with their own children! Once you are part of the Twin Oaks family, you are always part of the Twin Oaks family. Today, Hal and Barbara’s daughter Jenni Elman Davis - herself a mother of three - is the Director of both the school and the camp. Jenni has maintained the small, family feel that generations are accustomed to. Jenni holds a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and has held every position in Twin Oaks at one time or another. She literally grew up here. She is second generation management and she ensures that the family-friendly environment remains a priority. Nut Free Environment We strive to maintain a “PEANUT/TREE NUT – FREE” policy throughout our camp, which means we do not serve or offer any nuts or products that contain nuts or nut oil as an ingredient. This includes pistachios, almonds, pecans, coconuts, among others. Twin Oaks does not allow any peanut or tree nut products on our grounds. Products that contain nuts, or are produced on machinery/facilities that also process food and/or candy which contains nuts, are also not offered or permitted. We are vigilant in all the food products we order and serve. We discourage the bringing in of food items but we are aware that at times it is necessary. In those cases, our staff is well trained to scrutinize all the labels. We will not serve food products where peanuts or tree nuts are noted nor will we serve products made in a facility that also processes nuts (even if there are no nuts in the product itself). Campers with allergies are cared for by a team of people whose primary concern is your child’s safety. This team consists of the camper’s supervisors, counselors, and the members of our medical staff. Additionally, we manage many other food allergies and specific dietary needs on a case by case basis. This includes campers with gluten-related issues, lactose intolerance, diabetes monitoring, dairy allergies, and any other special instances. Twin Oaks can provide soy products, gluten-free products, kosher-style foods, and other food items to accommodate dietary needs. Most importantly, you can rest assured that every precaution for your child’s safety is taken at Twin Oaks. OUR SENIOR CAMP STAFF Carin is one of our Assistant Camp Directors as well as our Assistant School Director/Principal. She has been a member of the Twin Oaks family for over 25years. Carin has worked in just about every position in camp so she has a real knowledge of the day to day camp operations. Carin really gets to know all the children and feels connected to them throughout the summer. Carin also works with staffing needs and placement, scheduling, planning, and every aspect of the day-to-day camp operations. She makes sure our camp days run smoothly. Michele is our other Assistant Camp Director and our School Medical Liaison. Michele works all year on planning our spectacular trips for the Gemini and CA campers. She uses many resources and connections to ensure the Gemini trips are fun, interesting, and diversified. She also works tirelessly on the camp's special events and weekly themes and activities. She has been working at Twin Oaks for more than 25 years as well, and is involved in every aspect of the day to day camp operations to help ensure a happy summer for all. Randi is our Creative Arts Director and has been "in the family" for many years, both of her children were campers and counselors. Randi manages all the divisions of Arts & Crafts. She continually comes up with new and innovative projects. Randi engages the children and encourages them to use all their senses. The Arts & Crafts counselors, some of which have specialized in art in their schooling, are always providing innovative ideas and hand-on assistance. Dave is our Athletic Director. During the school year, he is a math teacher at a local high school and coaches the track team. He draws upon his experience and coaching skills to develop and coordinate our sports program. He takes full advantage of our turf fields by planning fun and challenging sporting activities. His sports counselors are trained in how to build campers' levels of confidence and self-esteem. The sports staff provides skills training, support, and encouragement in all their sporting activities. Ellyn is our Aquatics Director. She works full time in one of our pre-school classrooms here at Twin Oaks and is proficient in recognizing various levels of needs and identifying ability. She holds her Red Cross certification and her WSI certification. She ensures that all instruction is appropriate for each camper and follows the Red Cross levels of instruction. Ellyn manages the skills evaluation and testing at the beginning and end of camp.
